Sylvie and Niko chilling together
We are so excited to be anticipating our very first flat-coated retriever litter at Maywood! This litter will be co-whelped/raised with Sylvie's breeder.

For those familiar with our breeding beliefs and practices in goldens, coming into a rare breed with a very limited gene pool is a challenge. There is no perfect dog and sometimes you have to sacrifice wanting one trait to get something else. How very fortunate we were to meet Niko at a show...because I don't feel like we're sacrificing anything with this combination! This litter boasts an unheard of less than 1% COI as we try to expand diversity within the breed. Both Niko and Sylvie have incredible sweet temperaments and are lovely typical examples of the breed. We are expecting medium drive puppies who should be competitive in the breed ring, performance events, or suitable for active family companions.

From Niko's owner:
In 2021 I decided to take a leap of faith and import a Russian male FCR. When I sat down and mapped out goals for my breeding program one way to achieve those goals were to diversify our gene pool. I looked into several overseas breeders and found Olga Romanko of Russia. I had actually considered importing semen from Nikos father, Bubble. With COVID at its peak that was rather impossible so instead decided to import Niko. Niko is the epitome of the FCR temperament and is very typey. Nikos structure and natural retrieving ability should serve any breeding program very well in the future. It doesn’t hurt that he’s the sweetest, lovable and most goofy boy to be around.
Conformation
Niko had already made his presence known in the show ring before he even landed in the US. His breeder in Russia had already garnered a Reserve Best Puppy In Show with him before he was five months old. Niko is a striking, flashy boy with a stunning head. Niko has now finished his Champion title in just four weekends of shows. Two of his majors were awarded at Supported entries. His final points were a five point major awarded by Judy Gladson, a breeder judge. After some time off he was brought back out in 2024 and has now earned 10 points towards his Grand Champion title. I look forward to seeing what all he accomplishes in the show ring in the coming years.
Field
Niko is one of the most naturally talented retrievers I've ever had. He truly loves to retrieve anything and everything. Sometimes that may include a shoe or two. He has been started on ducks and is a natural. While we attended the FCRSA National Specialty in FL this year he was awarded a Judges Award of Merit in the Unsteady Singles competition with little to no training beforehand. When we got back from FL we hit the hunt tests and he earned his JH. I look forward to getting his WC in the near future!

I will add...we had the pleasure of keeping Niko at our house for a week during the breeding. I picked up this boy I'd met only once before, loaded him in my car, and walked him into a house full of goldens. THREE girls were in season. He was the perfect gentleman, always listening to me, respecting my other dogs, politely trying to disrespect the cat (don't ask haha), and demonstrated his lovely temperament time and time again as I took him with me several places to get a break from the girls. He even got to play a little agility and obedience while here and I was so impressed with how quickly he learned and how willing to work with a complete stranger he was!

Sylvie's full story can be read on her page.

After a long discussion with our repro vets and Sylvie's breeder and co-owner, we decided that because she only cycles once every 19 months or so (normal for the breed), our next opportunity to breed her would be when she's already five years old. Sylvie hasn't finished a championship title quite yet, but we all felt she absolutely had something to offer to the breed as she has a bombproof temperament, beautiful structure and movement, and even with limited showing has proven how much talent she has. We are so thankful to Niko's breeder for allowing us to bring Sylvie to Niko! Once she's back from maternity leave, we look forward to tackling those last points!

Sylvie has all of her OFA clearances, which can be viewed here.
